Reasons for Cardiac (Heart) Workup

Does your dog have any of the following signs?

  1. Heart murmur on physical examination
  2. Coughing
  3. Syncope – Fainting, weakness
  4. Exercise intolerance
  5. Weight loss, muscle wasting
  6. History of seizure
  7. Pallor
  8. Irregular heartbeat – Too fast, too slow, or irregular rate.

Annual or biannual testing is indicated for the following breeds:

  1. Doberman Pinscher
  2. Boxers
  3. Bulldogs
  4. Any older small breed dogs.

Does your cat have any of the following signs?

  1. Heart murmur on physical examination
  2. Panting
  3. Weakness
  4. Weight loss, muscle wasting
  5. Difficulty breathing
  6. Sudden onset of hind leg paralysis & pain
  7. Exercise intolerance

DID YOU KNOW?

  • -40% of cats with no audible heart murmur DO in fact have underlying heart disease

  • - Unlike dogs and humans, cat will RARELY present with gradual signs of decline due to heart disease. Their illness progresses quietly, but their sickness presents VERY SUDDEN in onset.

  • - Male cats are more likely to acquire heart disease than females, and Ragdolls, and Main Coons are more likely to acquire heart disease than any other feline breed.

  • -Cats with severe heart disease RARELY show any clinical signs until a sudden onset of heart related illness including: breathing difficulty, collapse, pain in back legs due to blood clots.
